Soaring employment, labor and health care costs impact manufacturers’ ability to compete in today’s global economy. Reducing these costs and increasing the availability of an educated and highly-skilled workforce is critical to meeting the demands of advanced manufacturing. Sound workforce policy decisions are necessary to increase Michigan’s manufacturing competitiveness in global economy.

Court Asked to Rule on Right to Work Legislation
Governor Snyder filed a request on 1/28/13 asking the Michigan Supreme Court to provide a ruling on the constitutionality of the Right to Work legislation which was enacted into law near the end of 2012.

Certificate of need Legsilation Sent to Senate Economic Development Committee
"Proliferation of medical services and facilities results in unwarranted health care costs," Delaney McKinley, the MMA's director of human resource policy was quoted in Gongwer 9/12/12. Three Sentenced In Unemployment Insurance Scam

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette and Michigan Unemployment Insurance (UIA) Agency Director Steve Arwood announced on 8/15/12 that three individuals have been sentenced for developing an elaborate scheme to receive undue unemployment (UI) benefits that involved registering at least 19 fake companies and 170 fictitious employees. The defendants are required to repay $160,000 in restitution.

MMA Involved in Health Care Exchange Discussion
MMA has been involved in discussions with the Governor, legislators and stakeholders about implementation and design of Michigan’s Exchange. SB 693, which would establish the MiHealth Marketplace, passed the Senate last year but has seen 12 hearings by the House Healthy Policy Committee with no action and many questions remain for House members.
