To eliminate burdensome and unnecessary mercury regulations that apply only to Michigan-based utilities, MMA continues to advocate for the repeal the “Michigan only” mercury rule, which creates a clear competitive disadvantage for Michigan energy producers. The rule imposes duplicative and excessive planning and reporting requirements with unreasonable deadlines and requires compliance with state mercury regulations years before the EPA is expected to impose similar requirements though different regulations on other states. This excessive regulatory burden is costing Michigan electric rate payers about $1 billion.
