Autism Mandate
Health care costs continue to present one of the greatest barriers to global competitiveness for Michigan companies. Since 2001, the cost of employer-provided health care has risen 83.4 percent. In light of these skyrocketing costs, businesses must shift an increasing percentage of the cost to employees, or are forced to decide whether they can provide health care to their employees at all. There is currently a proposal before the Legislature that would increase the cost of providing health care for employees by mandating specialized coverage for autism. The MMA has long opposed health insurance mandates and their impact on the cost of employer-sponsored health insurance.

Unemployment Insurance Reform
On 2/1/2012, MMA wrote to Rep. Dave Camp and Rep. Max Baucus in support of the unemployment compensation reforms included in HR 3630, the "Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2011" as it was passed by the House of Representatives on December 13, 2011. We also support measures to preserve state flexibility and to avoid additional taxes.

On 12/15/11, Governor Snyder signed into law Public Acts 267, 268 and 269 of 2011, which directly attack the $3.2 billion crisis by authorizing a bonding solution. The bills also reform the UI system by tackling many of the underlying issues that make Michigan's UI system slower, more expensive and less effective than neighboring states.

Regulatory Reform
Key parts of MMA’s Regulatory Reform package were signed into law 12/1/11 by Governor Rick Snyder. He signed five of the six bills in the package passed by the legislature three weeks ago with bipartisan support. However, Governor Snyder did veto legislation that would have assured that Michigan industry would not have to meet regulations any stricter than the federal rules covering the same issues.
