Background: Michigan-specific mandatory ergonomic rules are unnecessary and place an anti-competitive burden on Michigan job providers. There is no clear evidence that a mandatory standard is more effective than a voluntary one such as exists at the federal level. In addition, the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) has failed to establish a “clear and convincing need” to go beyond current federal regulation. Adoption of the proposed standard would position Michigan as only the second state to do so, with the dubious distinction of having the most burdensome regulation on the books.
MMA Position: MMA will continue to oppose the ill-advised ergonomic standard that will make Michigan less competitive in attracting job creating investment.
