The litigation climate is a critical component in defining the overall business climate. The National Association of Manufacturers reports that the American legal system costs the nation’s economy $865 billion annually. This is equivalent to a 5 percent “tort tax” on wages, or 2.2 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and it is significantly higher than the costs of our largest trading partners and competitors. Michigan’s litigation climate remains a bright spot in our business climate, providing a competitive advantage for Michigan companies.
