Short-Term Disability
Short Term Disability (STD) Plans provide weekly benefits of a percentage of an employee’s predisability earnings if an employee, due to sickness or as a direct result of accidental injury, is receiving appropriate care and treatment and complying with the requirements of such treatment and is unable to earn more than 80% of his/her predisability earnings at his/her own occupation for any employer. (This coverage can be purchased on a stand-alone basis for groups with 10 or more employees.)

Long-Term Disability
Long Term Disability (LTD) Plans provide monthly benefits of a percentage of an employee’s predisability earnings if an employee, due to sickness or as a direct result of accidental injury, is receiving appropriate care and treatment and complying with the requirements of such treatment and during the Elimination Period and next 24 months, is unable to earn more than 80% of his/her predisability earnings at his/her own occupation for any employer in his/her local economy. After the first period of disability, the employee must be unable to earn more than 60% of his/ her predisability earnings from any employer in his/her local economy at any gainful occupation for which he/she is reasonably qualified taking into account his/her training, education and experience. (This coverage can be purchased on a stand-alone basis for groups with 10 or more employees.)

Social Security — MetLife assists employees in obtaining the Social Security Disability benefits to which they may be entitled. This is a plus for employers in terms of reducing plan costs as well as for their employees who may experience the various financial advantages associated with receiving Society Security Disability benefits.

Work Incentive — Work Incentive allows replacement of up to 100% of predisability earnings including the disability benefits, other income benefits and return to work earnings while participating in a rehabilitative work program approved by MetLife. (For STD and first 24 months of LTD.)

Local Economy — By including local economy in the LTD definition of disability, consideration is only given to suitable employment opportunities within an employee’s reasonable travel distance.
