State MBT Web Site
The Michigan Department of Treasury developed a Web site to help businesses, tax professionals and others navigate the new Michigan Business Tax, which takes effect 1/1/08. The site is located at www.michigan.gov/mbt.
The site features answers to frequently asked questions and a 30-minute Web seminar, which provides an overview of the Michigan Business Tax and its provisions. Future Webinars on various topics are planned and will be available on the MBT Web site. Treasury is also working on an MBT estimator that will be linked from the site when ready. |

Surcharge Elimination and Government Reform Needed

One of MMA’s priority policy goals for 2008 is to develop a plan to eliminate the MBT surcharge and to reform state government spending. The new Michigan Business Tax (MBT) finally helped level the playing field between manufacturers and other segments of the state’s business community by providing a major credit for Personal Property Taxes manufacturers pay. But, with the last minute addition of the surcharge to avoid the ill-considered services tax, businesses are paying too much to support a government that needs trimming.

MMA Targets MBT Surcharge Replacement

The MMA is working to replace the newly passed Michigan Business Tax surcharge, which swapped places with the ill-conceived services tax, repealed on 12/1/07 through the hard work of MMA and its members. Though the Association and its Tax Advisory Committee supported the surcharge as the lesser of two evils, repeal of the MBT is crucial to improve Michigan’s economy.

Services Tax Repealed and Replaced

The lobbying strength of MMA and its members meant the ill-conceived services tax was repealed 12/1/07. It was replaced with a surcharge to the Michigan Business Tax (MBT), a plan originally formulated by MMA’s Tax Advisory Committee to avoid the damaging services tax extension. The compromise legislation was passed over the weekend as MMA vice president of government affairs, Chuck Hadden, continued to advocate on behalf of industry.

Compromise to Repeal Services Tax Blows Up, Members Urged to Contact Legislative Leadership

A deal to repeal the services tax and replace it with a surcharge to the Michigan Business Tax (MBT) fell apart on 11/28/07 when both parties ended negotiations within 48 hours of the implementation of the services tax.
