Latest Advocacy NewsWeaver Resigns; Granholm Appoints Davis for Supreme Court8/27/2010On 8/26/10, Justice Elizabeth Weaver stepped down after she reportedly secured Governor Granholm’s promise to appoint a northern Michigan jurist to replace her on Michigan’s Supreme Court. Weaver believes a justice from northern Michigan brings independence and a different perspective to a court currently dominated by justices in the Detroit and Lansing areas. Environmental Reform Package Moves to House8/27/2010The Senate Natural Resources Committee passed SB 1442 [pdf file] out of committee on 8/24/10. This bill provides up to $150 million in funding for orphan sites over the next three years. The money comes from a bond proposal passed roughly eight years ago to address water quality standards. The nearly $1 billion bond has hardly been utilized due to some extremely tough requirements put in place that made it cost prohibitive to access. Because the bond was aimed at water quality, any money used from that source for Part 201 projects must be related to water quality. This funding is a temporary bridge until a more permanent funding source can be identified, which will most likely be some sort of bond initiative. The bill does include some prioritization for the Department of Natural Resources and Environment based upon risk threat and economic potential of a given site. Agreement Reached on K-12 Budget7/2/2010Wednesday night, 6/30/10, agreement on the K-12 budget for Fiscal Year 2011 was finally reached in conference committee — the day before local school districts were required by law to have their budgets for next year finalized. The bill, SB 1163, includes an increase of $11 per student. $20 Million for Small Manufacturers7/2/2010On 6/25/10, Governor Jennifer Granholm announced that the state of Michigan will award nine small manufacturers $15 million in grants and $5 million in loans for a total of $20 million through the Clean Energy Advanced Manufacturing (CEAM) program.
