Manufacturing Technology Consumption Up 52.9 percent

On 7/12/10, it was reported that the May U.S. manufacturing technology consumption totaled $178.34 million, according to the American Machine Tool Distributors’ Association (AMTDA) and the Association for Manufacturing Technology (AMT). This total, as reported by companies participating in the U.S. Manufacturing Technology Consumption (USMTC) program, was down 22.9 percent from April but up 58.6 percent from the total of $112.42 million reported for May 2009. With a year-to-date total of $966.63 million, 2010 is up 52.9 percent compared with 2009.

NLRB Considers Electronic “Card Check”

As reported on 7/15/10 in the National Association of Manufacturers publication NAM Capitol Briefing, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) recently published a request for information for “secure electronic voting services” that include electronic balloting devices. The NRLB is looking for solutions that support mail, telephone, web-based and/or on-site electronic voting. They have also indicated that it is interested in performing union representation elections through remote devices — which is much different from the current process of NLRB-supervised elections that typically take place at work sites through manual ballots.

Agreement Reached on K-12 Budget

Wednesday night, 6/30/10, agreement on the K-12 budget for Fiscal Year 2011 was finally reached in conference committee — the day before local school districts were required by law to have their budgets for next year finalized. The bill, SB 1163, includes an increase of $11 per student.

$20 Million for Small Manufacturers

On 6/25/10, Governor Jennifer Granholm announced that the state of Michigan will award nine small manufacturers $15 million in grants and $5 million in loans for a total of $20 million through the Clean Energy Advanced Manufacturing (CEAM) program. Michigan’s CEAM awards, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act), are designed to help Michigan businesses diversify into high-growth, clean-energy industries.
