Recent Manufacturing News | Michigan Business, Municipal and Industry Groups Praise New Water Law that Protects Michigan Environment and Economy2/28/2006Representatives from nearly every sector of Michigan’s economy today joined in applauding the enactment of Michigan’s new water use law, which the group worked to support and help shape. The law balances long term water resource protection measures with the need for water by a wide range of industries, including agriculture, manufacturing, recreation facilities and food and beverage producers. “With the signing of Michigan’s new water use law today by Gov. Granholm, investors in Michigan’s economy can be confident the water resources they need to create and grow jobs in our state will be accessible,” said Doug Roberts, Jr., of the Michigan Chamber of Commerce speaking on behalf of the group. “The law provides clear, fair and scientifically valid standards for all water users to follow. At same time, we can all be proud of the legacy this new law holds for Michigan’s environment and future generations’ enjoyment of our state’s abundant waters.” “Water is Michigan’s natural economic advantage, “ added Mike Johnston of the Michigan Manufacturers Association. “The legislation ensures water will always be available to create high paying manufacturing jobs for Michigan citizens.” The group praised State Representative David Palsrok and Senator Patty Birkholz, who chair the environmental committees in the House and Senate and who led the often-contentious legislative effort. “We commend Sen. Birkholz and Rep. Palsrok for their leadership on this important issue,” said Joe Fivas of the Michigan Municipal League. “Their work to bring together diverse perspectives and strike the appropriate balance between meeting Michigan’s economic needs with responsible environmental protections led to the successful passage of this historic legislation. We also appreciate their courage in resisting the rhetoric of some of more fringe environmental groups, and instead, remaining committed to sound policymaking.” The industry group, which coordinated efforts to provide information about the importance of water use to the state’s economy to lawmakers, the media and public, included the Michigan Chamber of Commerce; Michigan Manufacturers Association; Michigan Municipal League; Michigan Retailers Association; Michigan Milk Producers Association; Michigan Potato Growers Association; Michigan Soft Drink Association; Michigan Aggregates Association; Michigan Concrete Paving Association; Michigan Groundwater Association; Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association; Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce and others.
