MiBiz MMA Calls for Structural and Economic Reform
2/1/2010
A key tenet of the Michigan Manufacturers Association’s 2010 Structural and Economic Reform Agenda is meaningful reform of the state’s spending habits through government and structural spending reforms. The Association’s efforts to move these reforms to the top of the political agenda received a significant boost recently with Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop declaring 2010 to be the “Year of Reform.” Bishop’s announcement was made as he released a proposal to cut over $2 billion out of next year’s budget through a series of reforms that cover six key areas including public employee healthcare and compensation, local police and fire, K-12 spending, Medicaid spending, and government efficiency.

The Michigan Manufacturers Association (MMA) sent an urgent letter to the Legislature on 10/6/09 calling on Michigan leaders to block any efforts to increase the already disproportionate tax burden on manufacturers. The letter was sent as soon as MMA learned that the House was expected to vote on a package of five bills that would raise $345.8 million in tax revenue, including $116 million from the manufacturing sector through a 15 percent reduction in Michigan Business Tax (MBT) credits.
